The Curls Conundrum

I’m not sure exactly when the boys’ wispy dark baby hair transformed into silky blond curls, but I know that I am infatuated with them. And I’m not alone.  They are the topic of many comments (and often touches) from everyone they meet.  These curls also sometimes elicit the comment, “What pretty girls!”

The first time this happened is likely what sparked my husband’s Great Haircut Campaign. I was able to push it off until their first birthday, with the “they’re not even one yet” excuse.  When that came and went, I conceded to a small trim of their bangs, which got the hair out of their eyes.

Their hair continued to grow and grow. I became inventive on ways to comb it to make it look less mullet-like, and to discourage new haircut pressure.  I couldn’t however, help Calvin’s Justin Bieber bangs from sticking in his eyes, or Abel from developing a shockingly long “wing” on one side of his head. Clearly the time had come for a new cut, but for some reason, the thought of them being curl-free made me teary. I can’t help but feeling that cutting them will mean the transition from baby to toddler, from nugget to boy.

Luckily, with the help of the talented staff at Goodfellas Barbershop in Westbrook, we struck a compromise. Abel’s hair wing was carefully removed, and bangs and other non-curls tastefully cut.

So if the time has come to do something, even if it is just a small change, to your child’s hair, make sure to visit someone you trust, and be specific, so your anxiety doesn’t turn to tears.

In our case, we are all happy with the result. The boys’ eyes are hair-free, my husband got them in the barber chairs, and the curls are still there.  There is definitely still a party in the back, but the front is a bit more businesslike.haircut9
